Veer, Pindari Legacy

Basically Pindaris were freelance mercenaries who survived in the jungles and were extremely good in commando warfare.  They were patronised by the Marathas for fighting the mughals and the British.  Whenever required they were called to cause considerable damage to the enemies.  They survived on looting the wealth of the british empire in Musalipatnam, Gujerat and Mirzapur.  They moved from one territory to another quickly so that  the enemy were unable to keep track of their movements.  They became an impediment to the expansion of the British empire in India.

The story of VEER is based in Rajasthan with Madhavgarh as the focal territory.  The history of the rivalry goes back to 1820s when Pidaris were ruling the roost in the jungles of Malwa and surrounding areas. Jackie Shroff ( Raja of Madhavgarh ) betrays Prithvi Singh ( Mithun ) in the battlefield and takes the help of the British to massacre the Pindaris in the battlefield.  Prithivi singh chops off the hand of Raja and escapes to the jungle.  The battle scene is beautifully picturised in the ravines and desert of Rajasthan.

Prithvi Singh is blessed with a Son VEER ( Salman Khan ) He is trained to become a warrior by his father.  He calls him Dade, and mock fights are played between father and son.  Here the director fails to show some jungle hunting scenes etc which could have been a part of commando training technique and warfare.  However for the fear of censorship and protest the scenes may have been left untouched.  A computer graphics could have been adopted like in the horse battle scenes.

After Salman grows up he is initiated into the plundering the British and their royal patrons. In one such scene reminiscent of Sholay train scene, he and his brother Arbaaz along with confidents attack a steam engine train to loot the treasury. The scene is typically shot like Sholay Jai Veeru along with Thakur scene. The SFX is obviously more modern and slick. Here he meets his charming princess Yashodara ( Zarine Khan ) He snatches away her most valuable ornament which is legacy of the queen mother. The consorts of Yashodra beseech Veer to hand over the prized possession of the princess, which he duly obliges in style. A portion of the jewel stays put on his jacket to be handed over in the later part of the film.

The movie takes quiet a twist with Veer and Puniya to be educated under the British reformation program for tribals. The brothers reluctantly land in vintage London. Some comic scenes are exhibited among the crowd by the brothers, and ultimately Salman spots his elusive princess Yashodra in horse carriage. The brother and cousin of the Princess are quite arrogant and upto insulting Veer and his brother. Eventually the story takes a twist with some bloodshed and the storyline begins to take a serious turn.is heart to the princess Yashodara, she in turn being daughter of Madhavgarhs King is in a dilemma to protect her empire from the enemies. Veer being son of the enemy naturally is a descendent of the legacy. The rivalry takes various twists and turns. Ultimately will Veer get to re-unite with his princess is the key to the story. Songs are passe, cinematography is good, dialouges particularly in the class room is quite hair raising. Datelines of historical period seems to be quite offtrack for sake of dramatisation i hope.

The theatre had 50% occupancy. There were some dramatics with some arguement and fights within the theatre which added to excitement of the movie. The young crowd was belligerent and whistling as if they are drawn into the battle whenever Salaman entered the arena for fighting. Inorder to embedd a love story with a unknown face and pull it off is a stupendous effort. Kudos to Anil Sharma director and the producers. More battle scenes would have added to the overall movie watching excitement.  was basically drawn to this movie because of Salman participating in an exhibition horse racing in Mumbai which was telecast live in Bangalore Turf Club. This acted as a perfect tonic to perk up the movie promo, which otherwise has been low key. The movie stakes are quite high with 150 crores. I am sure the movie will make profits within two weeks. Kudos to the producers for investing in a historic movie.

Overall Veer is a good epic movie with mercenary background. Love in the background adds as a filler to the movie for its song and dance. The one legged dance performance of Salman is fabulous watch it Insallah.

TITBITS :

1. With so many retakes on horse riding i strong reckon that some actors maybe compelled to wear abdomen guards, like the cricketers to avoid injury. Lol

2. Sword fights between Mithun and Salman caused many a injury on Salman, once he literally fainted another time he got pierced by sword on his back, leading to bleeding and hospitalisation.

3. Salman had a miraclous escape along with the stuntmen Vikram, while standing on the horsebacks to perform the stunt. This is one of the classic stunt wherein his presence of mind saved himself and stuntmen from having a nasty fall.

4. Some of the incidents were narrated in the Dance India Dance show, try to watch the repeat on Zee TV to catch up on the sidelights of the movie which is the costliest Bollywood movie upto date

Chance Pe Dance

Failure is the stepping stone to success.  Our hero Sameer Behl  ( Shahid ) believes that one has to really be focussed to be achieve something in life. A gestation period of 4 years is required to really see all the ups and downs. Does it sound like his own journey to Star Status.

After JAB WE MET and Kaminey this movie is a little bit of let down. A decent romance or kissing scene too is missing. Maybe the storyline was changed as an after thought. It is surprising that a struggling Hero lends almost 18 K to his friend to enjoy with females, giving credence to the casting couch theory.

Sameer does a Lungi advt and one Yogurt advt to begin his career. The Lungi advt is funny, it states in the punch line that circulation of air is guaranteed.........provided there is breeze. He is thrown out of the yoghurt advt. since he was critical of the kid model, who happens to be directors kit and kin. So it is an indirect message to new comers, think before you open your gob. Don t throw tantrums otherwise one will regret liesurely. In one Kannada film a hero was slapped recently by a director and he has taken it in his stride so that his picture sees the light of the day Lol

By chance he comes across the heroine Tina ( Genelia D’Souza ) in a dance class and passes a honest comment on her dancing skill. She happens to be a choreographer, and she takes in her stride, because Sameer’s dancing skill is obviously better than her. One day impressed by his dance, he is offered a role by Monish Behl ( director ) for a dance oriented theme. Sameer is thrilled eventually after nearly 4 years of struggle he has an opportunity to hit the screen as an hero. But chance or bad luck has other things in store for him. He is discarded in favour of choosing a hero through reality show.
Why Director Ken Gosh was not able to present the reality show, with the thrill of SMS voting is a mystery. Whereas the struggle of upcoming actor is depicted well in form of being chucked out by his owner for not paying rent. The hero prefers to stay put in Zen, he even dries his undies on the steering wheel, has his bath in the school bathroom, and washes clothes over there. He even takes up assignment of a dance teacher to earn his livelihood. He is even kicked on his box or abdomen, seems to be cricketer wearing abdomen guard as a protection. The cheeky dialouge how is going to have kids ? seems unwarranted.

But fate and luck has other ways, he is motivated by his girl friend TINA to participate in the reality show for his selection, but he has to give up his participation due to demolition drive by Delhi Muncipality in Saket, how the story takes a twist and turn is to be seen.

The movie is purely built on the dancing skills of Shahid, but there is not much humour, it seems to stark reality that life is a hardcore struggle. The only message seems to be never give up hope, even if you don t have god father in the industry. But if one has to struggle for 4 years will he have the resources to survive in reality is an issue which is convincing addressed i should say. There is nothing unethical or immoral route undertaken by the hero to succeed, that is the essence of the movie.

All bad things in life has to end...............and the hero lives happily ever after. Songs are passable.........luckily i did not snore in the theatre otherwise it would have driven out some of them. Occupancy was hardly 20% for the first day first show.............come on guys and gals enjoy the privacy and watch Chance Pe Dance.

Pyaar Impossibe, one sided love story

Hats off to YRF banner for producing such a simple love story, which is one sided to begin with, and how the twists and turns leads to realisation by the heroine ultimately.  The magic of producing a good movie is all about getting the audience interested in the storyline and lead them to the logical conclusion. Sounds simple but to execute it with a simple dialouge and storyline is quite difficult.

What is more impressive about the movie is that the message passed on to the viewer that original is always original and someone parading or claiming credit for invention by just stealing would ultimately pay his price when asked to prove his authenticity. How the movie goes about proving this point is the simple story of the movie.

Abhay Sharma ( Uday Chopra ) is a geek who is used to finish homework for his friends without any reciprocration. He is in love with Alisha ( Priyanka Chopra ) but is unable his express his love for the fear of rejection. So the one sided story progresses with body language and symbols expressed by Abhay. Alisha in her youthful exhuberance does not notice singnals form Abhay. One day in her drunken stupor walks dangerously on the garden bridge, with a pond surrounding it. She delicately balances on the balustrade and trips into the water for Abhay to rescue her from drowning. When Uday is about to give mouth to mouth rescutiation she wakes up throwing up water on his face. Thus missing an opportunity to kiss Priyanka ? Star power works Lol. She is quickly escorted by her friends back home only to be chided by her father to get back home, which is obviously Mumbai. How the story takes a twist with lingering one sided love story is padding for the movie.
Abay meets Sid ( Dino Morea ) who is a maverick, and wants to buy the software designed to integrate all the operating systems like Windows, Palm, Chrome, Mac, Linux, etc into one platform and call it as Unity with a symbol U. Abhay takes a break from the meeting to consult his dad for giving the original files of the program, his father cautions him not to give the original software to Sid without confirming the deal. In the meanwhile Dino Morea steals the software by downloading it on his pen drive from the Laptop left behind by Abhay. Abhay refuses to give the original software and instead offers Dino an executable CD. Dino obviously does the vanishing act obviously after thanking him stating that software may be still in its infancy. When Abhay goes to another client to sell his software he is informed that a Singapore based company already has a similar software and is planning to launch the same in the market place.

How dad motivates his son to go out and establish his credentials as the original inventor and retrieve his rights over the product is key to the storyline progression. In the bargain how he once again meets his old flame Alisha and proceeds to reclaim his proprietory product is logical conclusion.

Dino Morea has played his role as marketing maverick to finesse. Uday Chopra who backs up as Nanny for Alisha’s daughter is full of humour particularly at the Dinner hosited by her, in the name of Thai tradition. How he prevents Dino Morea to have a Nightcap is quite capracious. Anupam Kher’s acting as Uday chopra’s father is quite fantastic, without much of histornics. Priyanka carries out her role with sensitivity and glamour which is a rare combo.

Go and check out for yourselves, if the movie deserves a flop or a good movie without audience support. If one wants YRF to produce good movies, audience has to see it to appreciate a good team work. Otherwise the motivation to produce good movies may be off, we will be dished out only items numbers and mindless fist fights in the name of action. I would give full marks to the banner for producing a simple love story with message for the geek generation.

3 Idiots, an engineers spoof

I boycotted this movie in the first  week because of high ticket prices and unpredecendented crowd for this movie.  What made me to recant was the IIM campus, Chetan Bhagat controversy and sheer young and hep crowd. This movie is seems to be biggest hit of the decade with collections likely to cross above 300 crores. On the hindsight publicity gimmicks of pechan kaun ? type by AMIR was not essential at all, meeting Dada at Kolkatta, dressing as ordinary citizen, etc. Vidhu Chopra’s outburst asking the media to SHUT UP or literally Mouthshut was another downer.

The movie should be watched for the sheer exhuberance of engineering hostel life, and pranks enacted by the three idiots AAMIR, MAHDAVAN & SHARMAN JOSHI. The icing on the cake is taken away by Prof VIRUS Shasarebude played by Boman Irani. College ragging scene is hilarious with pants down pranks on the juniors and how the senior himself is electricuted by his own piss. Whether this stripping scene promotes ragging in college as an accepted part of life as students in professional college is debatable. The curse of ragging was stamped down with Iron fist, now whether we should take it as artistic license for the film producers and treat the entire dramatics as filmy and let go.

Another gory or curse of the pursuit for excellence is committing suicide for failing to meet the expectation of the parents and peers. Suicide is not the real solution to all the problems should have been highlighted which the movie falls short of addressing. And of course dictatorial type of professors accentuate suicidal tendency by putting pressure on deadlines.

Kareena steps into the film at the ideal point surprisingly looking chubby and hep at the same time. Aamir’s film invariably has to have some kissing scene, that is reserved for the end. Lucky guy seems to have kissed both the sisters on one pretext or the other. We don t have the benefit of knowing how many re-takes were ordered for this clumsy kissing scene Lol.  Aamir is known for his perfectionist style ordering retakes if he is not satisfied.

The theme of the movie seems to be well executed with the help of Chetan Bhagat’s storyline. The need for education to reinforce innovation rather than mugging to score distinction seems very appropriate message to the youngsters. But how far the parents would agree to this philosophy ? To follow one’s heart and mind in pursuing excellence seems to be theme of the movie. If one loves his trade than one is bound to go out of the way to perfect his skills for the benefit of humanity.

Constant witty arguements with the nutty professor and Rancho raises the laughter quotient to it pinnacle. Surprising Kareena as professors daughter too swings into the hilarious scenes. The first half of the movie is hilarious and gripping and it ends with a suspense.

Balatkar speech, Chutney episode, All IZ well delivery scene helps audience to relax their tension to a great extent. After a long time a genuine comedy based on youngster pranks has been produced and enacted with aplomb. Raju Hirani seems to have mastered comedy direction. If he can direct Munna bhai with Sanjay Dutt, any other actor is bound to perform much better particularly talented one’s like Govinda, Amir, Salman and Shahrukh khan. I am sure Raju Hirani will end up producing a sequel, what better way to start the sequel from the Ladakh ? The location seems to be mind blowing. It is definitely a must see movie for all engineers at least

AVATAR, 3D Razzmattaz

After ages an excellent 3 D movie is released by Hollywood studios, with James Cameroon producing such an extravaganza.  The plot takes us to an outer spacewhere Pandora is located which is 4 light years away from Earth.

Pandora is inhabited by mutated humanoids called Navi, who survive to grow extra large ( almost 10 feet ) and live in harmony with nature which is almost perfect to be true. They are charged and interveined with their surroundings including the horses, dragon fly, trees and their mother land.

Beneath their mother tree which is designed like a huge baniyan tree, with special effects acts a focal point for living of the tribe known as Navi, and its underbelly is a treasure trove of Unobtainium. This mineral is valued at $2 lakhs per kilo on earth for producing electricity, which is implied of course.

Inorder to exploit the resources from Pandora’s terrain Avataars are created who can survive in the ozone rich territory. Humans cannot survive without O2 in this terrain. They create an Avataar to convince the tribe to vacate their domain so that the humans or people know as Sky walkers can successfully the mine the area.
Since the movie is futuristic the characters designed in Avataar too seems perfect with 12 abs plus physique. Jake ( avataar ) is the hero of the movie who is sent to mingle with the Omaticaya tribe. He is rescued in the first act by Neytri ( daughter of the chieftian ) by ferocious hunting dogs. She falls pity to Jake and his innocense, instead of killing him as intruder rescues him from ferocious dogs. She reveals the ways of life of the tribe and scolds him for being stupid enough to incite and attract the dogs to attack him in darkness.

Both of them are taken by surprise invasion by their tribes and they are captured and presented before the chieftian. The Chieftian wants to confirm that Jake is not an intruder with vested interests. He is baptised of sorts by the Queen who accepts his credential. But the chieftian makes sure that he learns the ways of life to survive in Pandora’s enviorns. He bestows the job of taming the shrew to his daughter Neytri. How they go about learning to-gether and fall in love in a surreal enviorns is basically the plot of the movie.

How the villians Col Miles and his mercenaries destroy the serene atmosphere of Pandora with lethal missiles ? How the Navi tribes regroup under Jake and Neytri’s leadership is part of an interesting story line.
The SFX unleashed in 3D is almost too surreal, but enjoyable. It is a real good movie for an entire family to watch. Do watch it in 3D because the technology perfection is superb. Cinematography is the best part of the movie, which i enjoyed to the core. One has to be prepared to pay double the price wherever one watches in view of the cost involved in production of the movie. The occupancy was 75% which speaks better of the production and promotion for the film. I hope James cameroon recovers his cost of 2000 crores spent on the movie, so that he comes with more brilliant and spectacular movie in this genrie.

The movie is a scuttle message to human being to care for their environs. With the imminent failure of talks or consensus over means to combat global warming at Cophenhagen this movie sends out a strong signal in the form of AVATAAR.

FOR ALL THE MOVIE BUFFS, it is an excellent christmas and new year gift...............a pandora box office hit

TITBITS ; check out the Indian connection in the form of Dileep Rao aka Dr Max Patel, even Joe Saldhana has some connection i suspect.

Qurban, in hollywood style

The movie release has been preponed obviously before the first anniversary of 26/11 but producers are giving an excuse that it may clash with two other big releases DeDana Dhan and Three Idiots. But the storyline of Qurban, obviously elequently elougises the motive of the terrorist.

A difficult subject matter has been well picturised by debutant director Rensil D silva, who has been specialising in advt films. The expertise in creating an impact with 30 secs modules has played a vital part in editing of the movie to make it a crisp thriller. The total movie length is 2.40 minutes and imagine holding the audience attention rivetted to their seats, that too without any song and dance. The stamp of Karan Johar as a movie producer is felt. There is no compromise on the expense incurred in action sequence.

The adult scenes are just far and few unlike the poster depiction nude back of Kareena. The movie is rated adult basically because of the voilence and gory killings rather than nudity. The sex scene is captured well in the camera and does not look vulgar at all. The chemistry of Saif and Kareena is quite obvious and natural. One dialouge which deserves mention is that of Vivek Oberoi who defends the jihadis in a classroom. One american student asks why dont you all Muslims vacate US if you all feel we are unleashing terror. In reply Vivek says yes eventually we will first you all vacate all the Muslim occupied land such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Saudi.

Picuturisation of the action scenes, even though created through studio and special effects is par excellance. The background score by Sulaiman brothers too is riveting. Ultimately it is the triumph of the good, to protect their women folk and eliminate the evil. How it is executed is the real skill of the directors. I would not like to go into the details and spoil the thrill of viewer experience. Such a brilliantly executed film should be watched for its sheer picturisation rather than read between the lines between the motives of jihadis.

There seems to be some change of climax of the film as an after thought......keeping in view of the sentiments of jihadis. Even ruthless can have a change of heart when it comes to his kith and kin and give up mayhem by blowing oneself. The message is loud and clear don t use your women and children to execute jihad.

The entire audience in the theatre were spell bound by the action, there was no war cry, except for some squeals in the kissing scenes. The movie was not packed, it was only 65% occupancy. At the end of the movie the TV channel crew was waiting for the reaction. I uttered good movie worth watching

End Of World 2012

The indian connection to the movie is quite a surprise.  The opening scene for the movie is shot somewhere in India, presumably the deepest coal mining area in Bihar, according to the actors dialouge.  It is here they discover that the earths crust is crumbling and the hero of the picture rushes with the bad news back to washington in 2010 and interrupts a party in progress.

On the sidelight of the movie John Cussack is troubled by his marriage crumbling with a spectre of looming divorce with his Wife, because of his neighbour Gorden.  The kids love the company of both father and lover in equal measure which is typical western style of life. The scenario is built up beautifully with American President, ( a distant resemblance of the current incumbent ) goading the scientist to confirm the pending Apolcalypse dateline.  Secret preparations are underway to cull out a rescue plan.  But will they manage to rescue billions is the moot question.

SFX of the movie is quite brilliant as in Independence day. SFX forms the highlight of the movie throughout the 2 hour 40 minutes movie.   The Waves of Tsunami is beautifully picturised, with earthquakes and collapse of multistoried buildings.  Some who do not follow the dialouge delivery may find the movie boring in parts.

Critics of the movie have written it off as repitition of disaster genre movie.  But to direct an Apocalyse event needs special skill which has been mastered by Ronald Emerick.  The movie in general transcends the language barrier.  The hoots and applause inside the theatre really tells the tale of a brilliantly conceived plot.  The background music is quite apt for the screening.

How the good triumphs over the evil and selfish intention seems to be morale of the movie.  Thus it signifies the end of the days with a new beginning.  However the scenario depicted in the movie, the mayhem etc may be in the realm of ficition.  The yellowstone phenomenon of Supervolcanoes does seem far fetched even though well picturised.

My take on the subject matter is slightly different, if the Sun were to collapse generating immense heat, it will turn everything around into ashes within seconds, the water from the earth might get evaporated too within minutes instead of Tsunami, there will be a dry bed of land instead of sea.  Mankind may be able to survive underground.  So this alternative might be more realistic than the directors conception.  However we should be thankful that the Kaliyug is ending.  Go watch the movie and pray that the end does not come on 21 12 2012 instead on 21 12 2112.

I am happy to give a rating of 4 star for the movie, which seems to be last disaster movie of the director as per news reports.
